Choices – a poem

When the last bit of green
And the air grows
Too heavy and thick
To breathe,
Will we still keep
Our social anxieties,
Worried what others
Believe we should be?

As we struggle for mere
And clean water and food
Become increasingly scarce,
Will we cling to our
Control systems and
Monetary slavery
As we watch others
Drop around us?

If we get less of what
We need to live,
How soon til we grow
Even more dulled
And easily led?
When is it enough?
Or is it never enough?

When the Earth is
Finally dead,
And we’ve collectively
Every square inch of her,
What then?

We must evolve
Or perish.
Neither option comfortable,
But one so much more
Than the other.
The choice is collective,
And choosing nothing
Is to choose
Giving up.

Etsy Shop Oops

Evidently, in the midst of my crazy work schedule, I allowed all but one of my Etsy links to expire. Whoops! Bad independent artist, bad! No biscuit for me!

So, anyway, that has all been corrected now, and in the interest of some self promotion, here is the link to my shop: Phantasms of Truth. As a reminder, this is where you can purchase some illustrations, as well as signed copies of The Little Book of Insurrection or the Poetry of My Discontent.

And since I’m on a self promotion kick, here are the links to the digital editions of my writing.

Another review of Penumbra!

I received my first five-star review of Penumbra on Amazon!

“I was given the opportunity to read a pre-release version of “Penumbra,” and I should warn you: I intended to read this story over the course of the week, but I found myself so wrapped up in the unfolding mystery of Beauty’s city that I ended up finishing it in one sitting! From the crisp opening pages, I was drawn into Beauty’s life and her collapsing reality. I loved the original fantasy creatures, the villains, the strange new heroes–all of it was refreshing and engaging, reminiscent of older sword and sorcery fantasy adventures, but with the grit and immediacy of a contemporary urban fantasy. From my interpretation, there were also some highly allegorical aspects to “Penumbra” that make it a stand out work of short fiction. I felt there was much more going on there than just an adventure story, but I won’t give anything away here.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking for something out-of-the-ordinary.”

First Amazon Review of “Penumbra” is Up!!!!

Lookey here!  At some point (May 4th, evidently), “Penumbra” received it’s first review!  4 stars, woohoo!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mysterious fairy tale! May 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I downloaded this title to my kindle for a road trip and I’m glad I did! It’s a dark fairy tale that starts with a seemingly fragile woman and transforms her into a true heroine. Very interesting characters and descriptive writing make this a fun and fast read…almost too fast!
And of course, my brain being what it is, I immediately started thinking “oh my goodness, it’s too fast a read, people are going to hate that it’s so short” but that’s how the story progressed, and I don’t know if the characters would have been served better by more time or not.  My readers will have to be the judge of that!  I will say that the pace it moves could mean that it is very easily adaptable for other media options, and I kind of like that.
Yay first review!

Some Ebook Formatting Self-Publishing Tips

These are a smattering of tips (in no special order) that could be helpful to you when formatting/publishing your ebook.

  1. If you plan to upload both on Smashwords and Amazon (and I recommend you do), format for Smashwords first because it is FAR more difficult to format correctly for Smashwords.  Then just save a new copy for Amazon and switch out the verbiage on your title page.
  2. If you haven’t already written your work in a properly formatted template, it is helpful to copy and paste your document into notepad first and then copy and paste it into the formatted document.
  3. Save your settings as “ebook” and learn to write directly in this style if you are planning on publishing with frequency.
  4. Smashwords requires you to use preset indenting at the start of each paragraph, NOT tabs.  So, if you wrote using tab (which I did, derp), you must find/remove all tabs.
  5. To properly format for HTML settings (this is what held me up on releasing my book), if you are working in Microsoft Word (possibly true for other programs), you MUST hit enter before you Page Break or else it won’t work.

These were the sticky points for me.  So I’m sharing my new-found knowledge with you!

Penumbra is now available!

Penumbra is available for download at Amazon and Smashwords!

Description: Fed up with the dirty city and a disenchanting life as a fashion model, Beauty’s world is at least safe. But the illusion of safety shatters the night that she frees herself from her self-imposed fears only to be thrust into the magical underbelly of the city, where forces that want to save humanity and evil beings that want to feed off humanity’s despair fight for balance and power.

Forced from both the comforts and the trappings of her old life, now hunted by a cadre of sinister, rat-faced business men, Beauty’s only hope is to join with a strange magical ally. Together, with the help of fae creatures in unlikely guises, they must seek out an enchanted, improbable artifact that can heal the city before evil tips the balance, once and for all.

This powerful coming-of-age fairy tale follows the path of a young heroine who chooses to take fate into her own hands for the first time in her life, and of the consequences that her choice has on the magical beings of the city.

Warning: I’ve been told by several beta readers that they had intended to read Penumbra over several sittings but ended up getting so sucked into the story that they read it all at once.

I would have had this out last week, but it took me forever to get the HTML formatting on Smashwords correct.  Turns out that you have to hit enter BEFORE hitting page break!  So now I know.

Now begins the fun of submitting this to reviewers, getting set up on Goodreads, and updating all my social media sites.  Woo-ha!

By the way, if you are a book reviewer and would like a free copy of Penumbra, feel free to contact me and I will be more than happy to send you one.
